Students have taken part in a week long extravaganza of events.  Its has been great to see happy and engaged learners taking part in workshops and talks.  We have had sessions such as Sports with West Bromwich Albion, Army team building, rocket firing with the navy, RAF talks, Visits from universities and ASK apprenticeships.  It has been great to see all of our students engaging with employers and HE providers and has been a really exciting time and a perfect end to the year.

Covid Safe Careers Day!

On October 22nd, 2020 we held a Covid safe careers day event.  Several outside speakers attended following all guidance to enable our students to have access to a variety of careers and HE and FE providers.  Key Stage three students took part in a variety of events including a STEM activity, which was well received and a business design challenge.  Thank you to Marriott Hotel group and Willmott Dixon who delivered bespoke sessions on the day.

In Key stage 4, we enabled students to explore apprenticeships, careers in the armed forces and uniformed services as well as the RAF.  Students also attended a session about the sixth form at Etone and various colleges in the area.  By popular request, the Landscape gardener also attended and visited groups during the day.

Sixth form students had the opportunity to explore apprenticeships and HE.  The football academy met with football managers and people within the sport.

Think higher and the careers hub were also in attendance to enable selected students to continue with their training.

Feedback from employers and students has been positive.  Employers have complimented us on the safety aspect and the engagement of our students.  The students themselves stated that the day was informative and has helped them think about future carers and the links between our employability skills and the careers they may wish to follow.   The Careers Hub is using Etone as an example of good practice in the current Covid pandemic and we were all delighted to still be able to provide our students with some hands-on experiences of careers.

Careers Day 2019

On 24th October 2019, for the second time, we held a whole school Careers Day. Once again, the aim of the day was to inspire pupils’ exploration of career opportunities and offer advice and guidance for their future career choices.

Etone follows The Gatsby Foundations ‘Good Career Guidance’ which states that “good career guidance is critical if young people are to raise their aspirations and capitalise on the opportunities available to them. At Etone, we work hard to promote impartial careers advice and guidance to our pupils and our Careers Day covered many different genres of careers and encouraged aspirations for all.

Year 7

Year 7 spent the day attending talks and workshops with a number of different companies including the Police and Fire Service and also discovered the world of manufacturing, hospitality and games design. Pupils were treated to a visit from a police car as well as demonstrations from the fire service, a web quest and designing a new computer game!

Year 8

Pupils in Year 8 took part in CCF workshops learning about the different aspects of the RAF and understanding more about being a part of CCF in school. Some pupils also had the opportunity to work with Wilmott Dixon, our Business in the Community partner, on some tailored projects.

Year 9

The West Midlands Ambulance service joined us for the day, offering demonstrations, techniques, careers advice and information about joining the service. Pupils were also able to take a look around the fast response vehicle and ask lots of questions about life as a paramedic. Pupils also received talks and information about roles in engineering and project design.

Year 10

Pupils were given lots of opportunities to spend time working with representatives from local universities, landscapers, computer engineering and driving ambitions. Lots of skills were taught and advice given about all the different roles available to pupils should they wish to follow a career path into these areas.

Year 11

The theme for Year 11 was next steps and all pupils in school were given a Careers Interview with a member of the Senior Leadership team. They had to complete an initial form of their skills and aspirations before embarking on their interviews. These were highly successful and we have been able to direct pupils to opportunities that have since become available. Following the interviews, pupils were invited to attend groups of discussions with Coventry University, Newman College University, Driving Ambitions and a unique opportunity to discover studying abroad. The final task for Year 11 was to experience lift in Etone Sixth Form and ask lots of questions about their pending applications. A selected number of pupils were taken offsite to visit the University of Birmingham for an in-depth look at how a university operates and what they can expect.

Year 12 & 13

Year 12 pupils had experiences with university representatives, with a particular focus being on UCAS applications and university life expectations. There was also some sessions with engineering and RAF representatives as well as an opportunity to work on their personal statements.

Year 13 were taken offsite to experience life at De Montfort University in Leicester with the focus being transition to university, time management and experiencing life at university.

The Careers Day was a huge success and pupils had a plethora of opportunities and wealth of information to assist with their future career choices when they finally leave Etone College.

We are already very excited about hosting our 4th Annual Careers Fair on 19th March 2020 which will allow a further opportunity for pupils to meet with prospective employers, apprenticeship providers and further education establishments to discuss their futures and careers aspirations.

We also look forward to running another career day in the near future.

Careers Fair 2019

Thursday 14th March 2019 saw the second annual Careers fair at Etone College. Due to the amazing work of Miss Waite and the success of the pilot event in 2018, we had to move the 2019 Careers fair to the sports hall to accommodate all of the presenters.

The pupils filtered around the event in 30-minute slots, allowing them valuable time to speak directly to employers, apprenticeship providers and university staff.

Etone College ensures that through each academic year, every pupil will meet aspects of the governments Gatsby benchmarks for a robust careers education. By the time pupils leave Etone College at the age of 18, they will have experienced all of the benchmarks.

You can read more about the Gatsby benchmarks for careers education by following the link below.

The careers fair provided pupils and parents the opportunity to discuss potential next steps and the correct routes through to a certain career. It helps to bring the classroom learning to reality and indicates to the pupils what subjects they need and that every grade counts!!

Presenters included Rolls Royce, Department for Education, HOET, Domino’s Pizza, University of Leicester, Nuffield Health, McLean Restaurants T/A McDonald’s, UCFB, Wilson’s Solicitors, Forrest of Arden Marriott Hotels, Coventry University, George Eliot and UHCW Hospitals, Pure Gym, National Citizens Service, Willmott Dixon, CROWN Bevcan Europe & Middle East, Warwickshire College Group and Evolve Teaching School Alliance to name but a few! We also had our own Sixth Form stand which had lots of interest from pupils.

Feedback from presenters was very encouraging and all enjoyed the experience. Etone College was particularly highlighted as being “the best fair attended so far and the most positive”. Pupils were inquisitive, proactive in their approach and behaved remarkably throughout the day.
